A pyramid is a structure whose shape is roughly that of a pyramid in the geometric sense; that is, its outer surfaces are triangular and converge to a single point at the top. The base of a pyramid can be trilateral, quadrilateral, or any polygon shape, meaning that a pyramid has at least three outer triangular surfaces. The square pyramid, with square base and four triangular outer surfaces, is a common version.

The Giza Pyramids are six colossal square pyramids built out of stone by the ancient Egyptians in the 26th Century BC. The largest and oldest one, officially known as the Great Pyramid of Giza, was built as a tomb for the Fourth Dynasty Egyptian pharaoh Khufu, and is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. When finished, it stood at a height of 146.5 meters (though it has shrunken down to 138.5 meters due to the outer limestone layer being removed), and it held the record for tallest man-made object in the world for more than 3800 years.
